If you find yourself wandering through the tranquil streets of Kankijicho in Kyoto, be sure to carve out some time to visit Shiden Cafe. Nestled within the scenic Ume Koji Park, this delightful cafe offers a truly unique experience—imagine sipping your favorite beverage while perched inside a refurbished streetcar from 1924!

Shiden Cafe is not just your average coffee spot; it's a charming blend of nostalgia and modern café culture. As you step inside, you'll be greeted by the warm, inviting atmosphere that radiates from the rustic interiors of the vintage streetcar. The ambience here is perfect for both those looking to unwind and those needing a cozy nook to catch up on work, as attested by visitors like Jordan Nottrodt, who appreciated the relaxed vibe while enjoying an iced oolong tea and a unique snack.

The cafe's menu features a variety of typical café offerings, including comforting teas, artisan coffees, and the intriguing streetcar handle snack. While some reviews, such as that of Gordon Man, mention that the snacks can be a tad stale, they encapsulate the fun spirit of this quirky eatery perfectly, adding to the adventure of indulging in a slice of local history.

For those with a sweet tooth, the shaved ice is a must-try, promising a refreshing treat on a hot day, as noted by Rachel Evans. Alternatively, the salted variation of the streetcar handle has won hearts too, as Ellie C shared her delight in the texture and unique flavor.

Moreover, this charming spot offers more than just food; it serves an experience that transports you through time. Eating inside a streetcar, where you can practically feel the echoes of its storied past, is unlike anything else. Customers like 김파토 express that the nostalgic feel makes the trip worthwhile, even if the prices feel a bit elevated for the offerings.

So whether you’re taking a leisurely break while exploring the nearby attractions or seeking a quaint spot for lunch, Shiden Cafe is a hidden gem that promises both comfort and character. Come for the food, stay for the charming ambiance, and leave with lasting memories of your Kyoto adventure.

Adorable spot. You can come and go as you please in 2 of the carts. I sat for a couple of hours catching up on work from my phone. I plan to go back because it’s such a unique experience in the relaxing park. I had an iced oolong tea and streetcar handle snack. Like other reviews say, they are sort of stale but what do you expect from a “streetcar handle that tuned into bread”? (This is what my translator said is on the description of the food)

Nice little cafe tucked away at a local park nearish to the main station. The interior is very lovely, as you would have already guessed, it's a train carriage fashioned into a cafe. It's got quite a rustic and old fashioned feel. Very instagrammable! The food is some typical cafe style food and drinks, teas, coffees etc. They have hotdogs which I didnt try and popcorn as well as their signature bread ring. It's like a round hard pretzel and it comes with a variety of flavors. The packaging of the ring makes it look like a train handle strap... also designed for the gram. Anyway prices aren't too bad, I'd say it's cheaper than Starbucks and more expensive than fam mart. Staff was very friendly too.... I was greeted by 2 lovely ladies. One of them is from Taiwan and the other from Mozambique. Definitely worth a quick visit at the very least!!

A cute area that I stumbled upon after visiting the Aquarium. I got some shaved ice which was delicious and a good price!

Popped in on a hot day for a quick sit down and snack. This place has a lovely interior of an old bus converted into a cafe. A great concept with the bus handles as the interesting bread-like snack that is sold there. I recommend the salt one. There were 4 converted buses in total - 2 rest areas, the main cafe and seating and then a souvenir shop. All reasonably priced. Our snack cost 300 yen! Gave Studio Ghibli vibes! Was very quiet.

This cafe in an old tram waggon is a pleasant surprise. You can have yummy shiso-juice here, but also shave ice, ice cream or a hot dog. You can sit in one of the other waggons to eat as well.

Old tram wagons converted to commercial venues 1 souvenir shop and 1 cafe and 2 free rest areas. The cafe inside the tram has a unique vibe. A relaxing pit stop during a hot summer day.
